What Is Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR)?

Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) is a federally required compliance program designed to reduce fugitive emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from industrial equipment components.

LDAR programs require facilities to routinely monitor valves, pumps, connectors, flanges, compressors, and pressure relief devices using EPA-approved methods such as Method 21 or Optical Gas Imaging (OGI). Components exceeding regulatory leak thresholds must be repaired within mandated timeframes and re-monitored to verify successful correction.

The purpose of LDAR is to:

• Reduce air pollution
• Minimize product loss
• Improve operational efficiency
• Ensure compliance with 40 CFR Part 60 (NSPS) and 40 CFR Part 63 (NESHAP)

An effective LDAR program is not just monitoring — it is a structured system of inventory management, routine inspections, repair tracking, documentation, and regulatory reporting.
